Champions League/Europa League restructure
If anyone at UEFA gave a shit what you think, how would you restructure these competitions?

I would make the CL a proper league with 3 divisions of 8 teams. Four teams get relegated/promoted each season so it’s always a fresh batch of teams and always something to play for.

The 4 relegated teams from Div 3 are replaced by the 4 Europa League semi-finalists, giving less importance to winning the competition but making the 4 quarter finals massive games.

Europa is now a straight knockout competition over 2 legs.

And yes, I know, our owners are shit and we'll never get in to either competition so who gives a toss.

Straight knock out from day 1. No seeding, all clubs pulled out of the hat. If Bayern Munich or Barcelona get Real Madrid or Man City in the first game,so what.

Of course this wont happen, far more money in it showing endless amounts of meaningless games ghat advertisers are happy to oay for.

Go back to the original format

European Cup, Cup Winners Cup, UEFA Cup

Liverpool drawing the holders Nottingham Forest in the first round of the European Cup and going out was one of the great moments of that competition.

Re: Champions League/Europa League restructure
European Cup consists of the league winners from each league plus last year’s winner (and if they won the league too then the runner up in that country).

Qualifying until there are 128 teams - major nations get byes until the R128. Then two legged knock outs until a one legged final.

No seeds - drawn randomly by a celebrity such as Shakira or Brad Pitt.

Cup Winners Cup consists of all major domestic cup winners or runners up - if they’re both in the European Cup, then the highest league placed team goes here.

Same concept as above.

That’s it!

Was OK until you got to: " & no draw fixing".

That would take away UEFA's very reason for existing.

ornchurch ammer,

There are 24 teams in the inaugural season. Only 4 new teams qualify each year and replace the 4 relegated teams from div 3.

Should have clarified that I meant this mainly as an alternative to whatever UEFA actually come up with when they start their own elite league.

Re: Champions League/Europa League restructure
It makes lots of money so the big teams and tv want it so it’s going nowhere and certainly not into some risky knockout where cunts like Chelsea might be done in 2 games.

My choice would be :
32 clubs in the Champions League
4 from England Spain Italy & 2 from France & Portugal
Another 16 play some sort of qualifying to get there.
8 groups of 4 play home and away , top 2 of each go into round of 16, qtr finals & semis in a free open draw
Not a lot different to now but shorter

Europa League would be a cup
128 teams in a hat , straight knockout via 2 legs & no draw fixing.

The OP is mental. It wouldn't even work.

I don't really care, TBH. Since it was off terrestrial TV don't even show a passing interest. No idea who reigning Europa "league" champions are.

Re: Champions League/Europa League restructure
How can a Champions League be 3 divisions of 8 with promotion and relegation when, in theory*, no one knows who will qualify each year?

* I say in theory because the way football is now it is mainly the same teams that win their leagues.

let them all fuck off and play in a midweek super league.

PL might be a bit more interesting then.

Re: Champions League/Europa League restructure
2 leg knock out as it used to be and just for the champions not top 4, change the Europa league to be called the UEFA cup again and re-insate the Cup winners cup. Scrap the Premier league and call it Divisons 1, 2, 3 and 4 again

I completely agree with you. Won't happen though. UEFA themselves make a lot more money this way.

Re: Champions League/Europa League restructure
The Champions League is never going to go back to being a straight knockout. The elite teams all want a guaranteed number of European games each season. Much more likely that they will make CL a full on league at some point and maybe one which removes the big teams from their national leagues altogether. This idea seems like a reasonable compromise to that as it would be a maximum of 14 games so wouldn't effect national leagues.

the straw 2:27 Tue Jul 28
Re: Champions League/Europa League restructure
CL should be knockout only. Then clubs won't have the guaranteed revenue of 6 group stage games and therefore cannot budget accordingly.

This will restrict the amount of top quality players they can acquire and would break the cycle of the same teams being there every year. It's so obvious that this needs to happen in order to redistribute wealth and equality in the European game.

No TV whatsoever.

Radio commentary over the 31m short waveband system only.

Exciting/biting.

I imagine most people would have them like the FA Cup.

Straight knock out and no seeding. Maybe two legged each round.
